  I installed the 1.0 binaries first, then the current sources and
upgraded that way, in the hope that I would gain some understanding
along the way..  I think it has been a useful experience ;-)

  but whatever you do Ben, you definitely should consider using
current, much work has been done since 1.0 (and much thanks to all
that did it)

  there is a working binary snapshot of X11R6 at ftp.luth.se that I
used last week (in /pub/NetBSD), and a patch if you want to go that
way too..
