Is it meant to follow a symbolic link as the boot-file ?
   
   Currently, I can't make this happen (boots fine if the boot file is
   an executeable).

nope.  this is because when you run "installboot" it stores
the block numbers of the boot program along with the bootxx
program at the start of the disk.

what prom rev is this, btw?  and machine, etc.. ;-)
