ok, this is TOTALLY unverified. based on first impressions,
a re-niced make all && make install under /usr/src/lib is
grabbing a LOT more cpu time than I'd expect. If I do
desktop X shifts in the virtual desktop, the time to
poll round xterms and wake 'em up again is huge, of the order
3-4 seconds. 

What sort of things cause interactive response to degrade when
large CPU-hogs are around? What does StunOS do that makes it seem
more 'fair'?
