FWIW: when the code to enable the cache was added, my machine stopped booting.
I replaced the CPU module, and everything was fine again.

I hadn't booted IRIX for a long time, but when I last did, the machine came
up fine. So either the cache broke sometime in between, or IRIX did notice
the broken cache and work around (I suppose the former).
