You might want to poke at sys/arch/sgimips/gio/newport.c, around line 510.
The code matches the SGI docco very closely, but perhaps we missed something.

Seeing as how it's just a single bit error, perhaps we need to wait for a busy
bit to clear in rex3_read(). That could explain why colormaps are sometimes
screwed up ...
