The second case. Trying to switch numlock on and off with null results.
Also, the power button on front panel is not working, had to plug out power
cable.

Hm, yes. After I tried it again, it "freezed" elsewhere.

Ok. Setting it by hand worked for me.

I finally installed 1.6.1, this seems to be stable (survived kernel build,

I ran kernel build (over 1hour time :)) and several port builds on this kernel 
and it seems to be pretty stable. I also tried to extract some bigger .tgz 
files (softupdates on) and system is still running :)
