okay, tried a different hdd (DIGITAL, model RZ26L) ... the one i was 
using originally was a Hewlett Packard, part number 9J6001-037 .. umm, 
yeah.  bit of a bummer having to downgrade from a 4.2gb hdd to a 1gb 
disk... any idea if this can be fixed?
