Key depress or mouse move causes the same message on console while
ifconfig chokes.  In my system Ctrl-Alt-<X works as designed.

Strange.
- LANCE gets broken (somehow).
- heuristic CPU speed estimation goes wrong.
The latter cause is likely to compiler change fallout.
