With the current flap over OpenSSH, I decided to upgrade the OpenSSH
2.5.2p2 I had running via /usr/pkgsrc/security/openssh to the current
version of the package (3.3). The build appeared to succeed on my
DECstation 5000/240 running NetBSD 1.4U (built Fri Mar 10 18:43:18 EST
2000), but when I actually run the new version I can't appear to log
in any more: I get "Permission denied, please try again." after I
enter my password when prompted. :-(

Here is what I get in my logs on the machine to which I'm trying to
login:

>>>>>
Jun 27 15:12:17 netbsd sshd[1113]: Connection from NNN.NNN.NNN.NNN port 65505
Jun 27 15:12:17 netbsd sshd[1113]: Enabling compatibility mode for protocol 2.0
Jun 27 15:12:55 netbsd sshd[1113]: input_userauth_request: illegal user paul
Jun 27 15:12:55 netbsd sshd[1113]: Failed none for illegal user paul from NNN.NNN.NNN.NNN port 65505 ssh2
Jun 27 15:13:06 netbsd sshd[1113]: Failed password for illegal user paul from NNN.NNN.NNN.NNN port 65505 ssh2
Jun 27 15:13:11 netbsd last message repeated 2 times
Jun 27 15:13:12 netbsd sshd[1113]: Connection closed by NNN.NNN.NNN.NNN
<<<<<

I did create the new "sshd" user as indicated in the install message,
and user "paul" can login via the console (and telnet, when I briefly
enabled it).

Has anyone successfully run this package under 1.4 on their pmax? I'm
loathe to upgrade this box to 1.5 (assuming it's a 1.4 issue), but it
would be nice to have a working SSH again...

Cheers,

Paul.
