What prom version do you have? I have KN03-AA V5.1b.

I tried with the old 200meg Maxtor instead of the Seagate with the same
effect. So it's not the disk.

Could you please send me a stripped down INSTALL (not GENERIC!) kernel with
everything not needed on the 5000/240 removed? Thanks! I think compiling in
DDB might be useful in this case, hopefully I'll land in DDB instead of the
prom when the kernel crashes (*if* it crashes).

I have reset the prom settings with the jumper, still no go. I'm about to give
up.

I don't have any Ultrix media either and a quick look at Linux seems to
suggest it's in a pretty raw state on the DECstations. It seems like I'm out
of luck with this machine :-(

Again the configuration: DECstation 5000/240 with PMAG-C graphics, 24MB RAM.
