you'll need an lk{2,4}01, but this can be done headless.  (which I have
had to do after having multitues of VR292(?) monochrome monitors fail on
me)

clear the NVRAM by unplugging the nicad pack from the motherboard, and
powercycling the machine.  the first thing it will prompt when NVRAM is
cleared is the language, '4' is english.  then you'll be at a
prompt.  'enable tty(2)' turns on the communications port (the one with
the arrows over it).  'setenv baud2 9600' sets the speed of the
communications port.  you should start seeing echoes from your keyboard
now.  'setenv console 4' sets the console to the communications port.
at that point you should be able to enter commands from your terminal.

I've never tried the yank video RAM trick...
