I've noticed that NTP is having to work very hard to keep the
clock from really loosing it. On a DEC 5000/133 with a kernel
built from today's (Sat Jan 27) sup of -current:

NetBSD pmax 1.5R NetBSD 1.5R (PMAX) #0: Sat Jan 27 14:19:07 EST 2001
kwellsch@pmax:/usr/src/sys/arch/pmax/compile/PMAX pmax

I see this in messages while running a "make dependall" in src/lib/lic:

Jan 27 16:08:35 pmax ntpd[151]: time reset 8.624711 s
Jan 27 16:28:27 pmax ntpd[151]: time reset 10.262553 s
Jan 27 16:48:43 pmax ntpd[151]: time reset 9.333885 s
Jan 27 17:08:39 pmax ntpd[151]: time reset 9.448990 s
Jan 27 17:28:42 pmax ntpd[151]: time reset 10.222737 s
Jan 27 17:48:50 pmax ntpd[151]: time reset 10.170973 s
Jan 27 18:10:27 pmax ntpd[151]: time reset 9.678973 s
Jan 27 18:30:26 pmax ntpd[151]: time reset 7.792306 s

Is this box just too slow to keep time and compile software?

My userland is stock 1.5.
