I am trying to get samba to work in my DEC 5000/20 running 1.4.1. When I
tell it to start, only nmbd does. Even if I manually start smbd by saying

interceptor# /usr/local/samba/bin/smbd -D

when I check which processes are alive, by saying ps x, it will not report
smbd to be alive. How can I check what is going on?
