 Considering other connectors of xWy type, the card connector is female
and the plug is male.  It's easier to see e.g. at 13W3, used for Suns,
which has standard pins apart from the coaxial ones.  See also

 I think that brand new 3W3<->BNC cables are still avaliable; at least I
can see one in a catalogue from our local retailer of computer cables and
adapters (some are really weird, indeed).  I have no idea where they get
these from, though.
