There are no errors logged on xdm-errors.

The path for /usr/X11R6/bin is properly setup in all these
files. Do I have to have something like "xinit" somewhere in my
files so it goes directly into X? Again, what xdm is doing now
is prompt me for login name and password and after a few seconds
returning with the same thing. The only way out is to reset the
machine.

How do you do that? I chmod 4555 to /usr/X11R6/bin/xconsole as
entropy suggested. xconsole keeps coming back the the message
'couldn't open console'. I'm puzzled because 'xterm -C' doesn't
seem to have any problems in opening the console.

Finally I found that the rodent had a funny behaviour. I
replaced it and it works fine now.

Thanks.
