xconsole does not allow input and does not look like a
regular xterm. With xconsole you don't get the problem
where the error messages are written in the same window
which you are using for something else.

Hm. It sounds like there's a error somewhere in either
your shell startup scripts or the windowmanager scripts.

My Sun Sparc-1 used to do this when your .cshrc, .profile
or .zshrc did not set X11/bin in the path.
You'll have to use the appropriate X11 path of course.
