Thanks for updating this, and thanks to Toru for submitting the list
in the first place.  

By the way, changing the order of file and dns in nsswitch.conf
fixed my problem beautifully.  (This was the problem with slow
telnet response.)  I should have been clued in by the fact that 
my 1.4 installations on campus were working fine (direct internet
connection) but it was on my home network that I was having 
problems.  Just out of curiousity, why does this affect the behavior
of the "w" command, but not of "who"?
