Here's some history:

I have loaded both i386 and pmax 1.3.3 on appropriate machines ( pentium
90 and decstation 5000/200 resp.).
Both installs were quite straight forward and operated nominally ( many
thanks to all involved ).

I recently obtained the 1.4 pmax distribution (5/24/99). I really had
no data that I cared about on the pmax system so I decided to do a
complete ( from scratch ) install using the i386 machine as a helper.
I dd'ed the diskimage as per the install notes, booted the decstation
and sysinst came up as advertised ( as it did with the 1.3.3 installs ).
The disk partitioning went correctly ( as far as I can tell).

I started to do a complete install of the binary set from CDROM. The
system prompted for the device name. At first I tried rz6 ( scsi id 6
set for my CDROM ), then supplied the path at the appropriate prompt.
The system replied with ( not a quote ) 'required file base.tgz and
kern.tgz were not found '. I won't go into all the device names I
tried.

With this same expansion box( CDROM, 2 scsi hard drives ) and same
decstation at 1.3.3, the CDROM was recognized, (although I did not use
the CDROM for the 1.3.3 installation ) and was functional.

Question: for the following data,
