Well, I was able to start ftp'ing the tar.gz'd files with the new
diskimage Simon Burge made available, although that eventually timed
out. I just ftp'd the files to the machine using the shell from sysinst,
and installed from them.

I was going to just sup the source and compile a custom kernel, but I get this:
bofh# sup -v /mnt/etc/supfile.netbsd

I can ftp from ftp.netbsd.org just fine from the same machine, so
I'm sort of confused by what's wrong. Any hints?
