Thanks for the info.  I'll check out the psntools and addnerd packages.
vipw should work okay for now.  I'm glad to hear the cursor keys are
working.

I assume that no one else has a problem with emacs in X, so I must have
either set something up wrong or corrupted a file.  I'll probably
reinstall everything on another hard drive and see if I have the same
problem ( reinstalling the emacs package doesn't help).
