Thanks to Toru and Thorsten for config file help.  I'm now running a 1.3.3
kernel with the 1.2G asc driver and it seems file.  I even went to a
large source dir and did
make ; make clean ; make ;  make clean ; make ; make clean ; make 
(to "make" it do lots of disk stuff) and got no errors.
