  I think this is slightly mis-leading:

  The problem is that a 5000/200 will hang when running with a serial console
AND there is no mouse connected.  [The driver tries to initialize the mouse
and probably is hanging waiting for the non-existent mouse to respond.]  I'm
fairly certain [I don't have a mouse on my 5000/200 to verify this] that it
will function normally when a mouse is present.

  This should not normally be a problem with the 3100, since there will
either be a mouse connected, or a mouse loop-back connector, and the dc
driver won't hang.
