On tomita, can you:

	% cd /usr/export/pmax
	% ls -l dev/console
	% ls -l sbin/init

ok?  It's not something really silly like having unpacked diskimage.tgz
in the wrong place?  Also, what sort of machine is tomita - I don't think
I've seen you mention it so far...
