As Jonathan says in a later message, it's handled at the driver
level.  When booting a DECstation into single-user mode that has dirty
Prestoserve buffers you'll see messages like

	presto: flushing dirty buffers

(or similar, this is from memory and the messages aren't stored in the
syserr file) before you hit the hash prompt.
