Hi

Since I have 4 dusty old DECstation 5000/125s lying around, I decided to
install NetBSD to see if that would give me some "lifetime" out of them.
So far, it isn't looking promising.

What I did to install:
===============

chpt-ed (change partition) the disk under Ultrix 4.3 as follows:

/dev/rrz3a
Current partition table:
partition bottom top size overlap
    a 0 65535 65536 c
    b 65536 98303 32768 c
    c 0 204863 204864 a,b,d
    d 98304 204863 106560 c

disklabel-ed the RZ23 disk (I know, only 104Mb, but it should do OK to
boot from in a minimal environment - right ?) as follows:

type: SCSI
disk: rz23
label:
flags:
bytes/sector: 512
sectors/track: 33
tracks/cylinder: 8
sectors/cylinder: 264
cylinders: 776
rpm: 3600
interleave: 1
trackskew: 0
cylinderskew: 0
headswitch: 0 # milliseconds
track-to-track seek: 0 # milliseconds
drivedata: 0

4 partitions:
# size offset fstype [fsize bsize cpg]
  a: 65536 0 4.2BSD 1024 8192 16 # (Cyl. 0 -
65535)
  b: 32768 65536 swap # (Cyl. 65536 -
98304)
  c: 204864 0 unused 1024 8192 # (Cyl. 0 -
204864)
  d: 106560 98304 4.2BSD 1024 8192 16 # (Cyl. 98304 -
204864)

#

dd-ed the 32M-diskimage.gz file onto the "a" partition.

Tried to boot

What happened on the console:

What I also tried:
=============

boot 3/rz3/netbsd n and answering the questions manually.

disklabel -B with rzboot and bootrz, then unpacked base.tar.gz and
etc.tar.gz as per "instructions" but it never got past

Boot: 3/rz3/netbsd
Size: 1230656+55536 <==== what happened to the "+102600" here.

then it hung.

I noticed that the disklabel that was installed as part of the diskimage
has the following information in it:

# disklabel -r /dev/rrz3a
# /dev/rrz3a:
type: SCSI
disk: fu2263sa

Which doesn't even closely resemble my disk geometry or layout. Maybe
this has something to do with the reason for the apparent failures I'm
having. Surely only the first partition (and perhaps the swap space) is
important since the size of the image is 32MB. Why doesn't it say
"swap" for fstype on partition "b" (instead of 4.2BSD), and shouldn't
partition "c" be unused ?

Any and all help appreciated. Also, is there a list of boot options
(single user/no swap/multiuser,etc ) ?

PS: I've already decided, based on first impressions, that if there is
one thing that will keep people off NetBSD, it *HAS* to be the
incredibly lacking installation documentation. Is there a "Definitive"
guide somewhere that I've missed ?
