I'm not sure that Paul is in a state yet where -e will work -- fresh
pmax install, X probably not working yet, hence no vi. (i.e. no
termcap entry for console). At least that's the way it is with OpenBSD--
no vi until X is up. Unless NetBSD has a good termcap for the pmax
console? I've seen statements that such is "impossible". I would love
to be proven wrong on that.
