Does your base.tar contain a /etc/group? The etc.tar.gz from 1.2
contains a correct /etc/group, but I've never looked at the miniroot.

This one agrees with /usr/etc/etc/group and the /etc/group from the 1.2
etc.tar.gz, and is the same as my /etc/group (sans local changes).
