I've narrowed it down to a certain operation that crashes the machine. 
I was linking tcp-wrappers 7.4 when it died.  I restarted the machine
and tried to put all the object files (as a regular user) to a .a file,
like the makefile says.  After it prints the normal messages like ar(1)
should do, it simply hangs the machine at that point - locks hard.  This
happens regardless I have one or two disks attached to my machine.
