I'm trying to boot a Personal Decstation 5000/33
from a Decsystem 5100 running Ultrix 4.3.
On the 5100 i have the following /etc/bootptab:
#
# /etc/bootptab: database for bootp server (/usr/etc/bootpd)
#
# Blank lines and lines beginning with '#' are ignored.
#
# home directory
/usr/local/bootfiles
# default bootfile
defaultboot
# end of first section
%%
#
# The remainder of this file contains one line per client
# interface with the information shown by the table headings
# below. The host name is also tried as a suffix for the
# bootfile when searching the home directory (that is,
# bootfile.host)
#
# host htype haddr iaddr bootfile
#
#hostx 1 02:60:8c:06:35:05 99.44.0.65 ultrix
#hosty 1 02:07:01:00:30:02 99.44.0.65 vms
#hostz 1 02:60:8c:00:77:78 99.44.0.03 lps40
#node1 1 02:60:8c:00:99:47 99.44.0.01 tops20
cherry 1 08:00:2b:33:7c:a8 192.168.10.4 nfsnetbsd
The above is from the bootpd man-page (with a few changes to fit
my equipment) and my 5000/33 is going to
get the name cherry with the IP-adress 192.168.10.4 .
It's connected to my local Ethernet.
When i start bootpd -s on the 5100 an then do a
>>boot 3/tftp
on the 5000/33, i get the message
?IO: 3/tftp, msg err (0)
from the 5000/33.
I tried the same with a Linux-Box (2.1.26) and the bootpd (1.2.4) from
RedHat 4.0 .
In the debug mode i got the following output on the Linux-Machine
(after doing a >>boot 3/tftp on the 5000/33):
SuperVixen:~# bootpd -d 8
bootpd: info(6): bootptab mtime: Sun Mar 2 13:24:10 1997
bootpd: info(6): reading "/etc/bootptab"
bootpd: info(6): read 2 entries (1 hosts) from "/etc/bootptab"
bootpd: info(6): recvd pkt from IP addr 192.168.10.4
bootpd: info(6): bootptab mtime: Sun Mar 2 13:24:10 1997
bootpd: info(6): request from IP addr 192.168.10.4
bootpd: info(6): found 192.168.10.4 (cherry)
bootpd: info(6): bootfile="/usr/netboot/nfsnetbsd"
bootpd: info(6): vendor magic field is 0.0.0.0
bootpd: info(6): sending reply (with RFC1048 options)
looks good, i think, but after a time i get
?IO: 3/tftp, bootp tmout
on the 5000/33, what seems to be a timeout ...
the in.tftpd is started by inetd (i hope).
Can you see a big mistake in my setup, or do
i need to start some other daemons ?
If anyone managed to get a Decstation to boot
from an Ultrix or Linux server, maybe he/she can tell me some
details.
thanx for any help, Jan.
