I may have busted something unintentionally when I checked in
machdep.c a few days ago to fix something that had been broken.   I
believe that I introduced another change which may have broken things.
On the other hand, it could be some other problem in the tree - I
haven'd done a full update in several days.

I will try to check in a version of machdep.c with only the needed
changes today - perhaps that will solve the problem.
