Try recompiling gawk with GFMT_WORKAROUND defined.  If things work
better, then there's a problem in the library.  You might also try it
with STRTOD_MISSING and see if that helps.

Also, I thought that recompiling gawk from scratch fixed the syscall.sh
problem?
