Maybe I'm remembering wrong.   We always used the loopback connectors
at DEC, so I never figured out whether it could be done without them.
Actually, it may just be that if you can put a head on it and set the
console variable to point at the serial console, then you're fine as
long as NVRAM is good, and as long as you don't reset the console
variable...   If you want to have the boot prom figure out what
console to use, then you have to use the loopback connector.

Sigh.   The good old days at DEC are a fading memory... :'(
