For those purposes, I have no virtualization available.  (The closest I
come to virtualization in that sense is a MicroVAX-II emulator I've
been working on....)

chroot is my friend. :-)  (Alternatively, there's NFS-mounting the
relevant pieces.)

Okay, this will have to wait.  I neither have nor want HTTPS support,
and the http:// version of that just redirects to the https:// version.
But at work tomorrow I can probably find a machine I can fetch it on.

These are the parts I'm most interested in.  What source tree did you
start with?  I am probably going to be backporting any changes to 4.*
or 5.*[%], so I'm more interested in the changes than the tree.

[%] If nothing else, I consider gcc 4.9.0 unsuitable for open-source
    work such as I am interested in doing.
