The computer feeds power to the monitor, so you're asking for trouble by
connecting or disconnecting the monitor while the computer is on. I have
always either left the monitor attached the whole time, or disconnected the
whole time. When there is no monitor, I use telnet and NXHost to operate the
machine. Once you learn all the commands, this is more than sufficient.

I've not run NetBSD, though, so it may not be the same story as far as ease of
operation.

[ Not sure if this will solve all your problems, but it's a start.

That one is a good solution if you absolutely cannot find a sound box. But
your safest bet is to obtain a sound box and use it in place of the monitor. I
only have it so that the keyboard can stay attached for the power key. In
rare situations, I will blindly type on the keyboard to restart the computer or
give it a NeXT-style "three-finger-salute". If you're familiar with the NeXT
loginwindow, this isn't too difficult, so I've never needed to reattach the
monitor without going through a power cycle.

Again, operating blind with NetBSD may not be so smooth.
