After futzing with this thing for the better part of today, it seems
we had a faulty drive-sled assembly... The differences in the way
the rom's were reporting errors was due to rom revisions... The 2.3
roms seem to be touchier about scsi cabling than the 2.2 roms...

Anyway, it's figured out for the most part.
