The partition table shouldn't need to be modified, as both HFS and
HFS+ partitions use the Apple_HFS partition type. So you can use your
current HFS+ partition and format it as HFS.

I used to run that setup successfully; creating a small standard HFS
partition from NetBSD with hfsutils and copying the bootloader and
kernel directly from NetBSD.
