You switch with Command-F[1-5], wscons.conf shouldn't have any 
influence on that.

The entries in wscons.conf select which terminal emulation to request 
from the kernel so they need to remain vt100, only /etc/ttys needs to 
be changed. If you change them in wscons.conf the additional virtual 
terminals won't be created so you didn't lose the ability to switch, 
you lost the terminals ;)
