That's just wrong. The Xserver is supposed to have it's setuid bit set 
so it runs as root no matter who starts it. Maybe you for got -p when 
untaring it?

Your modeline problem is a problem with X, not the underlying operating 
system. If it works in Ubuntu or whatever have a look at their X config 
and see what they did differently.
