The reason is - macppc uses a generic OpenFirmware framebuffer device to
draw the console which is slow. Currently there's no official way to use
a different driver. If you have a mach64-based graphics chip ( which
doesn't happen to be a Rage LT ) you can apply some patches and use
sparc64's machfb which supports multiple screens.
