Are you sure it freezes? There's a known bug in XFree's radeon driver
which leads to a black screen when X exits but the console is still
usable. Just type blindly. And the Mini should still respond to network
traffic too.

As far as I know the answer is no. You can use a USB serial device as
terminal though, just add an entry for it to /etc/ttys
