I don't think anyone, "in the know" or otherwise, has a good
understanding of this bug. Timo's note in the PR may be referring to
my observation that the non-AltiVec pmap_zero_page() has the same kind
of bug that the AltiVec version did, which would cause problems at -O1
or -O0. But that's fixed now, the bug in 30410 is at the normal -O2, a
G4 with a GENERIC kernel should always be using the AltiVec version
anyway, and it shouldn't be model-specific behavior. So this is a
different bug.

My system (g4/400 pci) doesn't trigger it...
