Not that I want to mess up your investigations.
Are you sure we are looking at X there?
I ask because I see something similar _after_
terminating X, because it doesn't resore the console
properly.
Though, i have a completely different hardware.
I am thinking along the line: startx, wm fails, kills
X and drops you to an unrestored console.
But you may know better from the live picture.
