Yeah, I've had a look at XFree's ati driver - it's actually at least 
three different drivers - one for Mach64 which includes Rage II, 3D and 
probably a couple of others - that's what machfb supports, Rage 128 and 
Radeon. Looks like the R128 is closer to Radeon than the other way 
around.
Since I don't have any R128 hardware I can't do anything about that 
right now, maybe I'll do a Radeon driver later ( my iBook has a Radeon 
Mobility 9200, lets hope the 2D part is more or less the same across 
the Radeon family ) but this breed of chips needs a bit more 
initialization voodoo than the rest, on the other hand I can rely on 
the firmware to do most of that, at least when the chip works as 
console.
