Good question, I don't know how similar V3 and V5 are - as far as i 
remember the V5 is just a V4 with some more texture processors and the 
V4 an improved V3... maybe the blitter is compatible, I don't know. 
Right now it won't attach to a V5 because the PCI ID is different. What 
do the PCI BARs contain? If the first is a memory-mapped register 
block, 2nd the framebuffer, 3rd IO registers they may be sort of 
similar.

Do you have a serial console on the G3? In case the driver does 
something funky it could be useful.
