I'm trying to install NetBSD 2.0 on a PowerMac 6500 from the macppccd iso
install disk. Everything's gone pretty smoothly, up to the point of issuing
the boot command. I've tried a number of variations, but am unable to boot
from the cd.
Overview of steps I took:
Burned macppccd iso image from a PowerBook using Toast 6 Lite (using 'copy
cd' option from the image). Powerbook is running MacOS X 10.3.
Verified that the cd files match the image (quick inspection from PB
finder)
On the 6500:
Used bootvars to set input- and output-device.
Rebooted, using Command-Option-O-F to get Open Firmware prompt.
Poked around a bit investigating OF settings.
OF version is 2.0.3
CD drive is at SCSI ID 3, but show-children fails with a DEFAULT CATCH.
dir yields error saying OF can't OPEN dir device.
Used setenv to set read-base and and load-base.
Tried multiple boot commands:
boot scsi-int/sd@3:0 NETBSD.MACPPC (+ variations on case, ';1', etc).
With these variations, I get a short message about RESETing SCSCI Bus,
then no further response. The CD doesn't spin up, and rebooting was the
only way to get any response.
boot scsi-int/sd@3:x NETBSD.MACPPC
Tried other partition numbers, upon hitting return, the cursor moves right
one space, then no response.
Even tried the OF3 variations on booting and some other variations
boot scsi-int/sd@3:,\ofwboot.xcf NETBSD.MACPPC
With these I get freezing or various error messages, usually about not
finding the file to boot from.
The floppy drive in this machine is very flaky, and mostly doesn't work, so
I haven't tried a floppy boot yet.
Any suggestions for getting past the CD boot freeze are very much
appreciated in advance.
Thanks,
