In fact, I have seen something like that, but not exactly.  I've been
playing with a PowerBook 3400 (603ev CPU) off and on recently and just
got it basically up and running, but I do see it occasionally want to
just power off.

There have been a number of changes in NetBSD/macppc since 2.0.
Would you be willing to try a new kernel?
