Well, if they crash we know they're affected, if not - well... I think its sufficient. 
I wouldn't consider a panic that can be triggered by unprivileged users a trivial issue.

Btw. for me ( 400MB RAM, 1GB mfs ) it also crashed after ~150MB, virtual memory was nowhere near exhaustion.
