Mainly it involves calling OpenFirmware to do it ( OF_interpret("reset-screen"); )
I'm looking at the ofb driver to do this when it's switched back from mapped to terminal emulation mode. So far it's the Xserver's responsibility to restore whatever video mode it was started in on exit.
