hi,

is there some documentation on these hints?

my G4 (sawtooth w/Radeon 9000 Pro) seems to have this, too: leaving X, 
the gfx board does not deliver useful signals to the monitor... (it 
complains that the sync signal is out of range at 300kHz or so -- 
beware, this is a very high end monitor (22" LaCie Diamondtron NF, 
130kHz horizontal max etc., so i believe the OSD, partly... ;)
