Neither am I.  I can reproduce this in single-user mode where the only 
process is ping (with no options, e.g. -i 1 -s 56).  The hardware is a 
PowerMacintosh 7300 with a 150 MHz 604e.

Cool.  I didn't know XFree86 supported multiheaded operation on macppc 
;)
